Extraordinary, exciting and boundary-pushing artistic work needs time and space to develop and evolve. It doesn’t appear in a vacuum, it comes from dialogue, collaboration and experimentation.

Connect/Exchange is a programme of exchange/research/networking residencies for UK-based artists with a screen-based practice, delivered with partners across the UK

Together with a fee and project budget, participating artists had time and space to undertake initial research and development for a new work or project. They exchanged ideas with artists and curators in other regions; expanded professional networks and presented practice to the public via screenings, discussions and research visits – all with the intention that an intensive and supportive intervention in an artist’s career has a long-term impact.

Due to the range of partners and their specific focuses and specialisms, each residency offered a unique and bespoke experience.Connect/Exchange was successfully piloted in early 2014, with participant artists reporting the benefit to their practices both in the immediate and long-term.

Across the entire programme we facilitated or supported 7 artist residencies, 6 networking dinners, 6 exhibition tours and previews; 4 artist talks; 2 film screenings; 2 studio visits; 1 public filmmaking workshop; 1 performance; 1 research visit for key organisations from Digbeth, Birmingham to meet Newcastle arts scene; and 1 discussion about the nature of artist residencies.
