Theatrical release for I Am Nasrine

Posted: 11th June 2013

I Am Nasrine, the feature debut of North East-based writer and director Tina Gharavi, has secured theatrical release in the UK. The Bridge Tunnel Productions film, which earned Gharavi a BAFTA nomination for 'Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer' earlier this year and has been widely praised for its combination of aesthetic and political sensitivity in addressing the plight of asylum seekers in the UK, will screen at Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle on (Monday 17 June), Hebden Bridge Picture House (Tuesday 18 June) and Sunderland University (Friday 21 June) as part of a limited UK run.

Backed by Northern Film & Media and Northstar Ventures’ Finance for Business – North East Creative Content Fund, I Am Nasrine (15) was shot on location in the North East of England and clandestinely in Iran, from where raw footage was smuggled back the UK. It follows the eponymous Nasrine on a voyage of self-discovery when she is forced from her home of Tehran along with her brother Ali. Fleeing to the UK, she finds herself a reluctant exile in the North East, making new friends and forging a new path. But the pair’s future is far from certain.
