Generator/NFM launch £8k SBTRKT music video commission

Generator and Northern Film & Media have joined forces to launch a unique £8k commission to make a new music video for electronic artist and producer SBTRKT’s ‘Trials of the Past’ track.

Generator and NFM have teamed up with SBTRKT’s label Young Turks and XL Recordings to provide this rare opportunity to work with one of the UK’s most exciting electronic artists. SBTRKT was identified as an artist from XL Recordings’ roster with considerable visual potential. Five shortlisted film-makers will produce a DIY music video before being interviewed by a panel that includes both agencies and an XL or SBTRKT representative. One winning filmmaker will be awarded a production budget of £8k and become only the third person to make a music video for SBTRKT.

Transmission is a key component of Generator and NFM’s Space Invasion project – a series of events and activities designed which will realise unique creative collaborations across a range of unusual and conventional venues in the North East.

Space Invasion is one of the UK’s most ambitious BBC/Arts Council England funded Space projects. 53 projects have been commissioned nationwide to realise showcase the UK’s most exciting digital arts initiatives across connected TV’s, computers, tablets and mobiles.

SBTRKT began his career as a DJ in the East London club Plastic People and is a self-taught producer whose music is a mixture of two-step, UK funky, dubstep, US RnB and Chicago house. SBTRKT has remixed songs by artists such as M.I.A, Radiohead, Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx, Mark Ronson, Underworld and Goldie, and has released singles, EPs, and a self-titled album. SBTRKT's music has been placed in rotation by BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 Music.

SBTRKT is an alias used to support the concept of anonymity and has explained that he would prefer the music to speak for itself. To further support his anonymity, SBTRKT wears modern interpretations of native society ceremonial masks designed by Hidden Place.

The winning candidate or company will be supplied with a budget of £8,000 to create the final music video.

The commissioned video will be premiered at a final event on Saturday 22 September at The Sage Gateshead and will be made available through alongside wider distribution agreed through the partnership.
