Tyneside Cinema: The Kids Are Alright? Symposium

While multiplex cinemas are full of young people watching mainstream film, statistics continue to show that 15-19 year olds form only a tiny percentage of audiences in our specialised cinemas – with the majority of these brought ‘hostage’ by enthusiastic teachers.

Right now it’s an issue that’s critical for the independent cinema sector and it will have massive repercussions for the future of audiences for specialised film in the UK. With funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Tyneside Cinema has been fortunate to spend two years trying to address this issue in its building.

Through presentations, case studies, panel discussions and the first-hand and very frank views and opinions of young people, this significant symposium will share the outcomes and insights gained from this work, look at young people’s leisure and entertainment habits more widely and debate what may need to be done in future to address this issue.

The symposium is hosted by Film 2013’s Danny Leigh, is co-produced by Tyneside Cinema and Sampomedia and will feature a range of speakers from the industry and from the wider cultural and youth marketing sector including Jo Hargreaves of Morris Hargreaves McIntyre and Captain Crikey, a leading expert in cultural/social and brand/marcoms trend.

Staff from independent cinemas, film festivals, mixed-arts venues, non-traditional exhibitors and support agencies who are interested in developing young audiences. This symposium is ideal for CEOs and professionals working in marketing, management, programming, education & participation where audience development may not formally be part of your job description but is an important part of what you do.
