Meet the Artist - A 'Random Acts' Presentation with Lesley-Anne Rose

Northern Film & Media, Channel 4 and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art recently commissioned ten artists and filmmakers to make short films for Channel 4’s Random Acts strand. To celebrate their completion and in the lead up to broadcast the ten films are in exhibition at BALTIC from 28 October – 17 November 2013. To illuminate and complement the exhibition, the artists and filmmakers will be talking about their Random Acts projects.

Lesley Ann Rose, 'Spatulahead'

Spatulahead is a surreal, stop-motion animation by artist and animator Lesley-Anne Rose about the misfortunes of a boy who irons his head flat. Adapted from an anecdote by comedian Richard Todd, Spatulahead tells a part-fictional, part-factual based tale of Richard’s twin brother, brought to life by Lesley’s hand-made puppets.

Lesley will be discussing the craft of stop-motion animation in the digital age, covering her self-taught background and previous works in this medium. Using a selection of puppets and set pieces from Spatulahead, Lesley will deliver a demonstration on building armatures and will discuss the technical difficulties incurred during the making of her film.

Lesley works as a producer, writer and director of short, stop-motion animation films in the North East. She has exhibited throughout the UK and works extensively with community groups facilitating projects in stop-motion animation alongside her own practice.
