Tom is one of the UK’s most distinguished television producers, primarily based in Los Angeles as an international broadcast consultant and executive producer. He is currently international executive producer for the hit ABC primetime series BattleBots, now in its second season.
He began his career at the BBC producing programmes like Panorama, Nationwide and Tonight, then founded the independent production company Mentorn, responsible for many popular series such as Robot Wars, Challenge Anneka, Paradise Hotel and the BBC’s Question Time. His many personal awards include an International Emmy for drama. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Television Society for his services to the TV industry. He has also been chair of PACT and Skillset North.
After selling Mentorn, Tom was headhunted by FremantleMedia to run its North American operation, with a slate that included the U.S.’s most watched television series, American Idol.
Now, as well as running his Newcastle-based production company, Standing Stone, which most recently secured a development deal with the Fox network in the US, he is Visiting Professor of Media at Teesside University and still writes a weekly column for the Journal. He has been non-executive director of Northern Film & Media since 2008 and chair since 2014.
Tom spent his childhood in the North East and was educated at Newcastle Royal Grammar School.
